What is a Silent Retreat?

A silent retreat is a special opportunity to step away from everyday distractions and noise, creating space to hear the quiet voice of God speaking in your life.

Whether you’re new to silent retreats or have experienced one before, this weekend will offer you the guidance and tools to deepen your prayer, listen closely to God’s voice, and reflect on where Christ is walking alongside you.

Just as the disciples on the road to Emmaus encountered Jesus in surprising ways, come prepared to discover new ways of seeing your own journey of faith.

Come as you are. God is ready to meet you here. Are you ready to encounter Christ in a new way and set your heart on fire?

What is the purpose of this retreat?

This retreat is designed to help you grow in discernment, prayer, and intimacy with Christ. Through silence, guided talks, and spiritual direction, you will have space to deepen your understanding of God’s movement in your life.

Who is this retreat for?

This retreat is designed for undergraduate students, graduate students, and young adults who are seeking a deeper relationship with Christ through prayer and discernment.

Because this is a silent retreat focused on deepening your prayer life, we recommend that participants have previously attended a Newman weekend retreat, participated in CLC, or been involved with YAGS.

If you haven’t had these experiences but feel called to attend, please reach out to us! We’re happy to chat and help discern if this retreat is the right fit for you.

What if I don’t know how to pray?

That’s okay! This retreat is a great place to start. Prayer isn’t about having the perfect words or feeling something every time—you’re simply invited to be with God. Throughout the retreat, we’ll introduce simple ways to pray and your spiritual director will help guide you. You don’t need to be an expert in prayer to attend—this retreat will help you grow in your relationship with God, no matter where you’re starting from.

Do I have to remain silent the whole time?

For most of the retreat, silence will be observed, except during spiritual direction and designated times for faith sharing. Silence allows for deeper reflection, reducing distractions so you can hear God more clearly.

Will there be Mass and Confession?

Yes! Mass will be celebrated Saturday and Sunday, and Confession will be available during the retreat.

What is Spiritual Direction?

Spiritual direction is an opportunity to pause, reflect, and listen to how God is moving in your life. A spiritual director accompanies you as you discern God’s presence and invitations. Just as Jesus walked with the disciples on the road to Emmaus, a spiritual director helps you recognize where your heart is burning with God’s love.

During the retreat, you will have the chance to meet one-on-one with your spiritual director to reflect on your prayer and experiences. They will listen and help you reflect on where God is leading you. You will meet several times during the span of the retreat. It is important to remember that Spiritual Direction is not counseling or problem-solving but a sacred space to explore your relationship with God, trusting that He is already at work in your life.

As the date approaches, you will receive an email to introduce you to your Spiritual Director.

What should I bring?

  • A Bible
  • A journal and pen

  • Wristwatch – so you do not need to use your phone
  • Toiletries
  • Comfortable clothes/shoes for 3 days/2 nights
  • Jacket/sweater

How do I get to the retreat? Will there be rides?

We will organize rides for those who need transportation. Several days before the retreat, we’ll email all participants with ride details and driver assignments. When registering, please indicate your earliest departure time for Friday so we can coordinate rides accordingly. On Sunday, we plan to leave Culver City after dinner and clean-up, around 7:30 PM. If you have any special travel needs, please let us know in advance!
